Can I let you in on a little bit of a secret when it comes to texturing?
You don’t need to be a master metalsmith to start adding texture to your jewelry. You don’t need special tools, a five-step patina plan, or even a clear design idea. You just need the courage to start making marks. That’s what texture is, after all - intentional, beautifully imperfect marks. And in my humble (and slightly hammer-obsessed) opinion? Texturing is one of the most powerful, underrated design tools we’ve got in our toolkit.

But, before I dive headfirst into the wonderful world of texturing… there’s something we need to deal with first.

Let’s talk about that moment of hesitation you keep feeling before you start texturing.

Not the “this is too hard” kind of hesitation - because let’s be honest, most folks aren’t intimidated by the idea of hammering or using a rolling mill. It looks fun. It is fun. It’s the other pesky little devil on your shoulder that creeps in.

The one that whispers, “I don’t know if this is going to work... and I really don’t want to stuff it up.”

That voice that convinces you to play it safe, avoid experimenting, or skip trying something new altogether - just in case you ruin a piece you’ve spent hours working on. 

Whether you’re brand new, self-taught, or have been at the bench for years - these doubts creep in for everyone at some point. Maybe you’ve felt like this too?

What Is Texture, and Why is It So Important?

Texture is one of the most powerful - and often underrated - design tools we have as metalsmiths. At its core, it’s mark-making. Just like drawing on paper, texturing metal is about applying intentional marks - through different shapes, densities, depths, and directions - to create something expressive and full of character.

Think about how different a pencil line feels compared to a bold brushstroke. Both are marks - but the tools used completely change the vibe. The same is true in metal. Whether you're using a hammer, a punch, the edge of a file, a rolling mill, or something wildly unconventional, every tool leaves its own signature behind. And when you start combining them - layering, repeating, experimenting with pressure or direction - suddenly, you're not just adding texture… you're telling a story.

You’re not just working with tools - you’re sketching with them. Drawing with your hammer. Painting with your punches. Every mark becomes a design choice - and the more you experiment, the more confident you’ll get in making those choices with purpose.

How to Get Inspired: Start Building Your Texture Journal

Alrighty. Before you start whacking metal or playing with silver dust, you’re going to do something even more important:

✨ You’re going to look around. ✨

Because inspiration isn’t just in jewelry books and Pinterest boards. It’s everywhere. In cracked paint on an old door. In the bark of a tree. In shadows on the pavement.

Texturing is all about training your creative eye - to notice patterns, rhythm, movement, contrast… the stuff you’ll eventually feel when you start texturing metal.

And no, you don’t need to be “good at drawing.” In fact, if your sketching looks like a potato that’s been stepped on? Perfect. You’re exactly where you need to be.

This isn’t a portfolio. It’s your Texture Journal - your personal vault of inspiration. Some marks will turn into metal magic. Others might just stay on paper forever. Both are gold.

So now is the time to dive in. 

Draw. Scribble. Doodle. Go abstract. Go literal. Just go.

1. Architecture
   Look at walls, doors, tiles, grates, bricks, balconies, stairs. Zoom in on the small stuff.
   What patterns repeat? What textures show up in the shadows or worn-down areas? 
2. Nature
   Leaves, fruit, bark, rocks, shells, feathers - Mother Nature is a texture queen.
   From the jagged edge of a broken shell to the lacy veins of a leaf - nature doesn’t do boring. See what kinds of textures she’s been hiding in plain sight.

Why Texture Is So Damn Powerful

Here’s why I love texture - and why I think you will too:

• It’s expressive. Texture brings personality to your work - even simple shapes feel rich and meaningful when they’ve been marked with intention.
• It’s forgiving. You don’t need to be perfect to make beautiful textures. In fact, imperfection often makes the piece.
• It’s functional. Adding texture to a piece makes it more tactile, more interesting, and way more fun to wear.
• It’s addictive. Once you start experimenting, you’ll want to try everything -  stamping, fusing, punching, roller printing, bur textures, melty metal magic, scratch lines… you name it.
• It helps your work stand out. Nothing says “handmade and one-of-a-kind” like layered, thoughtful texture.

Types of Texture You Can Try (And Fall in Love With)

Texture isn’t one-size-fits-all - there are so many ways to mark metal, and each one leaves a totally different fingerprint on your work. Here’s just a taste of what’s possible once you start playing:

• Hammer textures – Flat-face, ball-peen, garage-special... they all hit different.
• Texturing with burs – Spinny, scratchy goodness (hello, controlled chaos).
• Punches & hammer handpieces – Fast, satisfying, and full of personality.
• Files and saws – Not just for cutting! 
• Texture transfer – Use rolling mills, fabric, leaves, or textured surfaces to press patterns right into your metal.
• Melty textures – Fuse that silver dust, torch it up, and let the texture emerge like magic.
• Texture wheels – Quick, effective, and perfect for adding bite to flat surfaces.
• Liver of sulfur – Technically patina, but when paired with depth? The contrast can be epic.
• Combining textures – This is where it gets wild.

And here’s a little bonus: texture isn’t just for flat sheet metal. Try adding texture to bezels and stone settings too - it’s an easy way to make your pieces stand out from every angle. (We’ve got some gorgeous examples of this if you want to see it in action.)

Feeling a little overwhelmed? Don’t be. You don’t need to try everything at once. Pick one, have a play, and build from there. This isn’t a race - it’s an adventure.

You Don’t Need Fancy Tools to Get Started

Let me just say this louder for the people in the back:
👉 You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars to start texturing your jewelry.

Here are a few things you probably already have that you can start playing with today:

• Holding a hammer and a scrap of metal? Take it outside and bash it on the pavement. (Seriously. Pavement texture = underrated.)
• Have an old garage hammer with a bit of character? Instant rustic texture machine.
• One of those mysterious Dremel kits that nobody knows what to do with? There’s texture gold hidden in those attachments.
• Beading tool lying around? Use it to punch your way into some unexpectedly epic textures.
• Nail and sandpaper combo nearby? You’ve just made yourself a DIY punch - perfect for adding detail to bezels and borders.
• Silver dust left over from a past project? Don’t bin it - melt it into magical texture instead.
• 100 grit sandpaper and a needle/sharp tool in reach? Perfect for scratchy, scribbly surface goodness.

“Okay, But What If I Mess It Up?”

First of all, you will. That’s kind of the point.

Texturing is all about experimentation. It’s not about getting it right - it’s about exploring what happens when you hit the same spot three times or when you rotate the metal halfway through a roll. It’s about happy accidents, curious questions, and pieces that don’t look like anyone else’s.

Some of my favorite pieces have come from total “oops” moments. And you know what? Customers love them more because of it.

Tips to Start Playing With Texture Today

• Start with scrap. Don’t put pressure on yourself to make a perfect finished piece. Just play.
• Limit your tools. Try creating 5 different looks using only one hammer. You'll be surprised how far it can go.
• Layer it up. Texture gets really interesting when you combine methods - fuse THEN roll, THEN punch.
• Look around. Hardware stores, junk drawers, old tools - all treasure troves for textures.
• Keep a texture journal. Seriously. Make little samples, note how you made them, and build your own texture reference library.
